The ravages of addiction

4 09 2008

I ran into an ex client of mine as I was leaving work today. I recognized him but he looked as if he were a living ghost. No more than 27 now he looks to be in his 50’s. He had learned he was HIV+ a week before he became my client.  An IV drug user and still just a kid. I will always remember him because he had guts. Hewas willing to go to jail to watch the Superbowl, so he left inpatient treatment watched the game and turned himself into the court the next morning on a Monday and went directly to jail. Now he is very ill and it is sad. Heis dying and the person who infected him has already passed away. They never stopped using together.  The walking dead litter the park next to where I work, they lounge on the sidewalk across the street, waiting to get high.  Some come down just for the hustle and the action because it never stops.  Meanwhile at the same time on the same street others struggle to stay clean and sober, walk past the dealers and the temptations. They are courageous and I admire them because they are living in hell and refuse to drink the water. Thank God we are celebrating another graduation as this has been a tough week at work.
